Jetta pin up

I was honored to be asked to do a pin up celebrating Dan DeCarlo's space teenager Jetta. The book, by Craig Yoe, is set to be released this week and can be ordered through online retailers such as Bud Plant and Amazon.com. Many other artists contributed pin ups too, such as Dean Yeagle, Stephen Silver, Craig McCracken, Scott Toleson, Ben Tan, and Jenny Lerew. I was asked to post a few other pin ups besides my own, but I have no idea how to separate the pdf files into individual Jpegs. In any case, please check it out!

For a few years I (via Electric Tiki) tried in vain attempts to secure a license for a line of Hanna-Barbera mini-maquettes. My admiration for these characters was only overshadowed by Warner's licensing fees. Maybe someday it will happen, but until then click the secret link to see some of the designs. Ironically this is one of the more popular images on my site. Looking back I'm not sure why. It must be the subject rather the really crappy drawing. Before submitting this image to mypsptubes, I wanted to redraw it. Still not a home run, but not as horrible as the original. I'm going to be doing a few variations as well.

These are some design concepts for the new Mighty Mouse maquette. I decided to go with this particular pose (final seen at bottom of post) partially in tribute to Andy Kaufman's brilliant routine. I also just the other poses were a bit boring. The pose was tweaked a bit for the final. I wanted a different style of base for this statue to separate it from the first, however, I still wanted the art deco feel. Almost as if it could be sculpted out of marble.

This is the companion piece for the Freddy image from a while back. This was done in 2006 in an effort to pitch "Tooned Up" maquettes to New Line. The color version was a bit rushed. I started playing around a bit more later, when sketching out at coffee shops. I like the B & W piece better.

One of my good buddies from back home texted me (what a pretentious phrase) and informed me that one of our favorite restaurants of all time was burning. Yogi Bear Honey Fried Chicken was once a chain, but now the only remaining location is in my home town of Mayberry, that is Hartsville, SC. It is by far the best "chain" fried chicken you will ever put your lips around. KFC, hah, you have nothing on the king of Jellystone! I'm on my knees praying to the lord Jesus Christ that they repair and re-open. The place is packed constantly so they should! It would be a good time to update the place. I'll lend any free design tips they need. Keep your fingers crossed! BTW, if you are a Hanna Barbera fan and like to travel, you owe it to yourself to visit this nostalgic site! Get the Jellystone feast and an order of gizzards! You will be in heaven! Go Yogi!

This piece was done as a pitch for "Tooned Up" versions of New Line's horror characters. I figured my products are distributed by Sideshow right? Sideshow's produced a lot or product with these characters so it seems like natural fit right? I got absolutely nowhere with the idea! Someone else will eventually do it, and this is just proof that it was my idea first. You are correct, I am pouting.

If you are like I am, you never look at your own work with too kind of an eye. i used to kind of like the original piece (on the bottom), but now every time I see it , I realize just how bad of a drawing it is. I was just learning Photoshop, but that's no excuse for the bad drawing. I decided to revisit it recently after 10 odd years to see what I could learn from it. It's by no means a big success, but I like it better. The chunky chick is a bit more dimensional and her skull doesn't look so wacky.

...did I think I'd ever "blog". First of all, I never thought I'd have enough semi interesting things to say on a regular basis. I still don't which is why I'm basically going to be using this as an online sketchbook. My first official post is to plug a book that I've been putting together for a couple of months now. It's called ironically enough, "Tiki, T-Dog & Whatnot", the same name as my brand new blog! It will be published by the super talented Alberto Ruiz through his Brand Studio company. Hopefully the artwork will hold up to the presentation as it will be a nice hardback with over 40 pages of full color. Over 200 drawings, sketchs, concepts and a few pieces that may qualify as actual illustrations, but the focus is on the rough stuff. This is the "almost" final cover. Let me know what you think. BTW, please use your real name when posting comments and promise I will do the same in return.
